The competition site was located in a former industrial complex in the city center, which has been recently reclaimed by the city. The Museum, as one of most important programs of this transformation, was located by the planning authorities in the T-shaped former cigar factory building that is dominating the northern part of the complex. The competition brief asked that existing building should be preserved and transformed in the museum, with the total program of 9.000 m2.
Basic concept derives from our understanding that MOCA should remain neutral, both in its spatial organization and as a presence within the urban tissue, because of its active relationship with contemporary events.
The original T-shaped building was preserved, on which two additional glazed cubes have been added enclosing it into a new compact form. Exhibition and storage spaces are placed inside, while the outer edge of the building (both in old and the new part of the building) is used for access to the exhibitions and is open to the outside.
Part of the program that is open for general public is dispersed along the building. A public hall is passing through the north-south axis of the building, from which one enters exhibition spaces, shops, restaurant and public parking in the basement. This area is extended to the roof, where are located other public programs (library, museum cafeteria, lecture hall etc.), that would extend the period of activity of the museum. The roof has the original geometry, but the existing tiles are replaced with glass opening it to the surrounding, and at the same time marking the buildings new role in the urban fabric. |
