The reconstruction of ruins in the centre of Rijeka had to deal with the specificity of their location. These buildings occupy a very important position in city's urban matrix: the site is directly above the medieval wall, overlooking the city's port and main commercial street. Their visible position marks the edge of the medieval city. In contrast with their extraordinary position, the buildings themselves are anonymous dwellings from the end of 19th century. Architecturally, they do not respond to their unique urban setting. The existing buildings were reconstructed in their original form, with minor interventions in the facade and reinforcement of structural elements. The most important aspect of the reconstruction of these buildings was their new roof. The roof has a 'turned up' shape, marking the end of the row. The roof is constructed in steel and sheathed by copper plates, covering the top floor terrace. The buildings were initially designed as residences, however most of the apartments have since been converted into office space.
